Weathering with You

Weathering with You
(Japanese天気の子HepburnTenki no Ko, lit. "Child of Weather") is a 2019 Japanese animated romantic fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The film is set in Japan during a period of exceptionally rainy weather and tells the story of a high-school boy who runs away to Tokyo and befriends an orphan girl who has the ability to manipulate the weather. The film was produced by CoMix Wave Films, Genki Kawamura and Story Inc., and the music was composed by Radwimps.

The film was released in Japan on July 19, 2019; the previous day, a novel adaptation written by Shinkai—one of his original works—was published. A manga adaptation illustrated by Watari Kubota was first serialized in Kodansha's Afternoon on July 25 the same year. It was released in 140 countries throughout the world, earning over US$193.1 million worldwide and ¥14.06 billion in its home country, Japan. The film was selected as the Japanese entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. It also received four Annie Award nominations including Best Independent Animated Feature.

Most reviews have given the film a generally positive response. On rating aggregator websites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, the film generally been rated positively by critics. Individual reviewers have also praised the film for its animation, plot, music and visuals but some criticised the film for being a follow up to Your Name, adding that it depends too much on it.

Plot

High schooler Hodaka Morishima runs away from his island home to move to Tokyo. When his ferry to the city is hit by a freak rainstorm, he is saved by Keisuke Suga, who gives Hodaka his business card. As Hodaka struggles to find work, a teenage McDonald's employee, Hina, takes pity on him and gives him food. Later on, Hodaka finds an abandoned gun in a trashcan he fell onto. After tracking down Suga's business location, he meets Suga's niece Natsumi. Suga hires him as his assistant at a small publishing company, where they investigate urban legends relating to the unusually rainy weather in Tokyo. From a psychic, they hear the legend of a "weather maiden" who can control the weather.
Hodaka sees Hina being intimidated into working at a back-alley club. Thinking it was a toy, he scares off its owners by firing his gun into the air, and he and Hina escape. She takes him to an abandoned warehouse with a shrine on its roof, where he throws the gun away. Hina astonishes Hodaka by demonstrating her ability to clear the sky by praying. Inspired by the legend of the weather maiden, Hodaka proposes that they start a business: Hina will clear the weather for events such as weddings and parties. Their business quickly becomes a success.
The police search for Hodaka, who was caught on a security camera threatening the club owners. Officers arrive at the apartment where Hina lives with her younger brother Nagi and interrogate her; Hina realizes that because they have no legal guardians, with their mother having died recently, social services are going to take them into custody. Hodaka visits Suga, who has also been visited by the police. Suga fires him, explaining that the police suspect him of kidnapping Hodaka. Hodaka, Hina and Nagi try to run away, but they are halted by a heavy rainstorm and falling snows. Sheltering in a hotel, Hina reveals that she is slowly turning into water. She explains that she is the cause of the abnormal weather and is intended to be a human sacrifice; her disappearance will return the weather to normal. Hodaka promises to protect her, but the next morning, Hina has vanished into the sky and the rains have stopped.
Hodaka and Nagi are arrested. Having already fallen in love with Hina, Hodaka decides to bring her back to Earth and escapes from the police with the help of Natsumi and her Honda Super Cub. After her Super Cub is immobilized, Hodaka resumes on-foot to the warehouse to reach the shrine. Inside, he encounters Suga, who attempts to stop him. The police surround Hodaka, but Suga, now inspired by Hodaka's desperation to see Hina, helps him escape. On the roof, Hodaka jumps through the shrine gate and is transported into the sky, where he finds Hina and asks her to leave with him, insisting that Hina let go of her worries about the weather and start living for herself. Upon descending to the rooftop shrine, Hina, Hodaka, Natsumi, Nagi, and Suga are all arrested, and the heavy rains resume.
Three years later, the rain has fallen without end in Tokyo, submerging much of the city. Having finished his probation, Hodaka graduates from high school and returns to Tokyo. He meets with Suga, who has expanded his business. After Suga encourages him to find Hina, Hodaka finds her praying on a street overlooking the drowned city. They reunite, with Hodaka promising her that they will be alright.

What is Chidori | Sasuke Uchiha | Juhara Jusuf

"Chidorriii...⚡" The Chidori is a high concentration of lightning chakra channelled around the user's hand.

Overview

The Chidori was created by Kakashi Hatake after he failed to apply his lightning-nature to the Rasengan.[6] He intended for the Chidori to be a weapon used only to protect friends and loved ones. To perform, the user first gathers lightning to their hand; the high concentration of electricity produces a sound reminiscent of many birds chirping, hence the name.[The lightning chakra has been shown on occasions to damage the user's hand, peeling the skin and causing it to smoulder slightly, but this does not appear to actually be debilitating.[Once the chakra is gathered, users charge at their target and thrust the Chidori into them, piercing them and typically causing fatal damage. Despite the sound it makes, the rapid speed at which it's used makes it useful for assassinations.

The speed at which the Chidori is performed, despite being one of its greatest assets, also represents one of its biggest drawbacks: users move at their target so fast that its causes a tunnel vision-like effect for them. Because they charge in a straight line it is easy for opponents to attack them, and because of the tunnel vision it is difficult for the user to see these attacks, much less react to them. For this reason, most ninja cannot use the Chidori safely.[10] However, a user of the Sharingan can overcome these drawbacks due to its heightened visual perception preventing the tunnel vision from occurring and its predictive capabilities making it easier for the user to avoid counterattacks.[11] Kakashi's reaction time with the Chidori eventually became so good that he was able to split a bolt of lightning with it, earning his Chidori the name "Lightning Cutter".

The Chidori requires a large amount of chakra to be performed, placing a limit on how many times it can be used per day. In Part I, Kakashi can use it four times per day[13] and Sasuke Uchiha can use it twice per day under his own power.[14] Both increase their limits to an unspecified number in Part II. During Part II, Sasuke demonstrates several variations of the Chidori that have been given shape transformation, such as Chidori Senbon and Chidori Sharp Spear, both of which allow him to attack at a longer range than the Chidori is capable of.

Variants

Sasuke has been shown using the Chidori with different chakra sources to grant his Chidori additional properties:

When drawing on the chakra of his Cursed Seal of Heaven, Sasuke uses a "Flapping Chidori" (羽撃く千鳥Habataku ChidoriEnglish TV: Black Chidori, Literally meaning: Flapping One Thousand Birds),[15] which is stronger, darker in colour, and sounds like flapping wings rather than chirping birds.[16] Different video games have called it "Wailing Chidori" (慟哭の千鳥Dōkoku no ChidoriLiterally meaning: Wailing One Thousand Birds, Game translation: Chidori Lament) and "Black Chidori" (黒い千鳥Kuroi ChidoriLiterally meaning: Black One Thousand Birds). If accessed in his first state of the Cursed Seal, the Chidori is normally coloured purple instead in most forms of media.

When imbued with the Six Paths Power, Sasuke's Chidori can be used to damage the Ten-Tailsjinchūriki, whose body is otherwise impervious to standard ninjutsu.[17] In Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, this is called "Dark Chidori" (黒き千鳥Kuroki ChidoriLiterally meaning: Dark One Thousand Birds, Game translation: Onyx Chidori).

Sasuke is briefly shown combining Chidori with Blaze Release: Kagutsuchi.[18] When it is clashed with Naruto Uzumaki's Rasengan, the resulting explosion destroys the statues at the Valley of the End and as well as both of their dominant arms.

Trivia

  • "Chidori" (千鳥) can also be translated to "plover".
  • The name Chidori comes from a story about famous samurai Tachibana Dōsetsu: Tachibana was in possession of a famous sword called Chidori (千鳥Literally meaning: A Thousand Birds). One day, while he was still a young man, he was taking shelter under a tree, as it was raining. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck him. However, Tachibana used his Chidori to cut the Thunder God inside the lightning bolt, allowing him to survive. After this incident, he renamed his Chidori to Raikiri (雷切Literally meaning: Lightning Cutter).
  • In the original Naruto anime, Chidori looks like a white, sphere-shaped amount of electricity that surrounds the palm. This is corrected in the Naruto: Shippūden anime, where the Chidori is depicted as it is in the manga: a formless coverage of electricity all over the hand.
    • However, in the video game J-Stars Victory Vs. and its + version, Sasuke's Chidori takes its incorrectly rendered sphere shape as aforementioned, but with the sphere contained within his hand (only during its startup animation and when Sasuke is running with the Chidori active).

The Chidori is a high concentration of lightning chakra channelled around the user's hand.

  • In both Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 and 3, players can customise some characters to be able to use Chidori. In the former case, it is called "Young Lightning" in the English script when used by Anbu Kakashi.
    • Also in some forms of media like the aforementioned games (along with Gekitō Ninja Taisen 4 and Clash of Ninja Revolution 2), Sasuke in his Cursed Seal of Heaven state (both level 1 and 2) often has the ability to perform both the normal version of his Chidori and its Cursed Seal version as separate techniques.
    • However, in Jump Super Stars, despite using the Cursed Seal Chidori in his State 2 form for his Battle 7 Koma, Sasuke's Chidori is coloured purple akin to the State 1 version instead of dark-white.
  • In the trailers for Boruto: Naruto the MovieLightning Release Bullet: Powerful Breath makes the unique sound that Chidori makes.
  • In the anime, Indra was capable of using a similar technique.
